Edward was a Grocer in 1841.

When his children were baptized Edward described himself as aTea dealer or Grocer. In 1851 he was living on his own aged 58 at 14 Morton Lane, Isleworth he was a widower and described himself as a Relieving Officer.

A Relieving Officer was an official who administed poor relief. After the New Poor Law of 1834 relief of the poor came under Poor Law Unions which covered several parishes, and were administered by Boards of Guardians of the Poor. The Relieving Officers would have been responsible for giving financial help to those poor that did not go into the workhouses - it was called out-relief. The Relieving Officers would have kept 'Accounts of Out-Relief'. You may well find that those kept byy our Henry Gibbs still survive. If they do they will be in the local history archives at the Birmingham Library. (Note: I found this description on the WWW. The reference to Gibbs is in answer to a query by someone else. - Michael)
