Notes for Arthur HAMMERTON
There is a plaque to Arthur and Maria in the church of St.Margaret's Wolston.The inscription reads :"To the memory of Arthur Hammerton and Maria Jane Hammerton. This tablet is placed by some of the old boys of Priory Hill School on the completion by them of the work in this chapel as a token of their sincere and affectionate regard. April 1924 A window in the south wall of the chancel has the following words."Giving thanks to God for the life and work of Arthur Hammerton of Priory Hill, Wolston who died 10th December 1902 aged 67, this window is dedicated by his pupils and friends in affectionate and grateful remembrance.
Coventry Herald 6 June 1924: A Loved Headmaster. Arthur Hammerton of Priory Hill. Dedication of Old Boys Memorial. At Wolston on Thursday afternoon, the Bishop of Covetry dedicated the finally completed memorial of the Old Boys of Priory Hill School ... which commemorates 10 of the old boys who died for their country and also Arthur Hammerton and Maria Jane Hammerton, the late revered headmaster and his sister. Mr Hammerton was a master under Mr Edge the founder.
Mr Hammerton became the headmaster in1859 till 20 years ago. Average number of boys was 35..Speaking as the senior old boy present, Mr Walter Browett said that Arthur Hammerton was a member of a well known Warwickshire family. His father lived at Wolston and a brother at Princethorpe.
As Headmaster he was assisted by his sister until she married. Mr Hammerton died in 1902. Arthur was executor to his brother George's will.
